Booker is launching Family Shopper, a discount fascia, to rival the likes of Poundland, Lidl and Aldi, writes Tan Parsons
The new concept is being trialled in one store in the West Midlands before a wider roll out. Booker sales director Steve Fox said: “What we’ve seen in the past 5-10 years is the success of both ‘hard’ and ‘soft’ discounters – they have a record market share.”
He adds that he has “huge respect for businesses like 99p stores and Poundland” but that they haven’t yet been able to operate in the smaller spaces offered by convenience retailers.
At the recent IGD Symbol Groups conference, Fox told delegates that Family Shopper was an opportunity for independent retailers to take market share away from the discount operators in the UK, such as Poundworld, Aldi and Lidl.
More details about the new fascia, such as the size of the estate and store locations, are expected to be revealed in the next few weeks.
